"The Iron Cross (Maltese Cross) was introduced as a decoration by King Frederick William III of Prussia in 1813. The Iron Cross was an exceptional decoration because it was not awarded on the basis of social status, as was often the case at the time, but solely on bravery and leadership skills shown in battle. The Iron Cross was used in the wars that began in 1813, 1870, 1914 and 1939. It has not been awarded since 1945. The Iron Cross was also used as a decoration at the initiative of Emperor William II at the beginning of World War I. It was awarded in its various classes in excess of 5.5 million pieces. At the beginning of World War II, the Iron Cross was re-established, and several million Iron Crosses were awarded in its numerous different classes." Source: Wikipedia.
